Greetings,

Is there a one stop shop for terms and definitions being applied to your suspension geometry calculators?

I am designing a vehicle using AutCAD and have a digital mock-up created, so I can easily measure distances in my design to plug into your calculator. The problem I am having is that if i try to enter in the values that I have set up for my design, the resultant error messages prevent me from continuing forward in using the app.

I'm referencing the book, "Chassis Engineering" by Herb Adams and see that your nomenclature is a bit different. Do you have a glossary defining each field in the SGC app so I can speak its language?

I have my control and pivot points but cannot evaluate them in your app due to this difference in knowing where each SGC parameter is measured from.

Thanks

Hi Erin,

I have based the SGC terminology and inputs based on what I perceived to be the easiest way to take measurements from a physical set-up. Though, I will admit this might not work for everybody.

I have heard of "Chassis Engineering" by Herb Adams although I don't own a copy. I do own "Competition Car Suspension" by Allan Staniforth and "Automotive Math Handbook". I'll get a copy.

I'll also look into adding a glossary of terms to this forum. In the short term though, are there any values in particular that are puzzling you?

Regards,
Huw

Huw,

Thanks for the reply.

The SGC terms don't necessarily throw me off, it's just not knowing where the SGC is measuring from. As you can see in my image, I can derive any measurement I need to plug into the SGC from my digital mock-up. In my current state. I'm trying to get the SGC to plot my geometry so that I can see how it performs.

Entering in one value, but not being allowed to finish all the values to be input is frustrating. If there was a way to toggle off the design constraints long enough to do the data entry, that would be helpful

If there were a diagram for each field that can be entered into the SGC showing how the measurements are taken, that would be enough for me to translate on my end.

I did notice, however that the front view of the SGC does not take into account the Z aixs of the vehicle. Such variables as toe-in/toe-oiut (related to steering arm length) or caster (for anti-dive) during bump steer could be solved if the pivot control points could be plotted in 3d.

I am, admittedly, starting from the mathematical perspective, as opposed to taking measurements from an existing unit, I don't want to ask for a change to SGC if the intent behind it is simply other than what I am looking for.

I can recommend the Adams book (especially for it's price $20) because it establishes the relationships between each component and the resulting effect on the dynamics of the vehicle as a whole. Fascinating stuff for a nerd like me..

I'd be happy to elaborate if it helps you at all..

Repsects,
Erin

Hi Erin,

I've started of glossary of terms here - //www.racingaspirations.com/forum?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=103 complete with diagrams. It's early days and unfortunately I have another engagement today so I've started with the values that are causing the most confusion.

In an ideal world the SGC will be as usable to those measuring a physical model as it will to those in the design stage. The art is finding the right collection of variables that both people can understand and use. I'd be happy to work with you to make it easier from the designer's point of view.

I've ordered the book so I have another point of reference.

Thanks,
Huw

Huw,

Wow, that was fast.!! I'll keep you posted with feedback.

Also, I have some reference material that cross references the SAE / ISO standard of terminology. I shoot them out through the email addy on your profile.

Thanks.!
Erin
