firstly the bump steer in mm is this measured at the rim edge or tyre. am i right in thinking low bump steer on compression is a lot more important than on droop. what are ideal limits to aim for (in real life situations?

The measurement is taken at the steering knuckle. 0 should be possible if the steering arm aligns with either the upper or lower control arm. The closer you can get to 0 the better but any improvement on what you may have will be a positive.
